Deploying bus lanes on urban expressways is considered as an important strategy to ease the traffic jam on expressways, which has received increased attention from the government agencies in Beijing. The primary objective of this paper is to use the advanced simulation approach to study the traffic impacts of bus lanes on urban expressways. In this paper, we select the western 3rd ring-road expressway as the study network, and design four bus lane alternatives, considering the deploying section, the form of bus lane, the configuration of bus stop, the traffic organization of ramp area, and the adjustment of bus lines. Then, we simulate and evaluate the scenarios using the INTEGRATION model. From the analysis results of two indices, i.e. average travel speed and distribution of traffic operational condition, it is found that although the infrastructure and traffic conditions meet the deploying requirements, the traffic indices results of the western 3rd ring-road decreased, and deploying bus lanes cannot improve the traffic efficiency. The key constraining factor is that separating automobiles and buses will complicate lane-changing and entry and exit of traffic near ramps. Therefore, it is suggested that such deployment be coordinated with the ramp control and the optimization of bus lines to improve the effects.
