    Review of Transportation and Energy Consumption Related Research

    With high consumption of energy, especially petroleum resources, transportation industry has received much concern. In view of this, the paper summarizes the domestic and international research achievements on transportation energy consumption, such as external costs determination of energy consumption, influencing factor analysis, statistical indices and data comparison, interactive relation between transportation energy consumption and social economy, relevant planning and policy making, prediction of energy demand of transportation industry. It also analyzes the characteristics and shortcomings of the existed researches. Some key issues concerning the future researches are put forward, namely, the statistical data collection and comparative indices determination, estimation of comparative consumption factors of different transportation modes, exploration of influencing factors and sensitivity analysis, as well as the establishment of relevant basic data platform and theory and method system.

    This paper introduces a method to realize automatic turning at intersections in urban environment based on the GPS/INS (global positioning system/inertial navigation system). It not only uses the GPS/INS to generate route network definition file, but obtains real time positioning and turning information. As the vehicle approaches the intersection, the paper utilizes waypoints which locate the end segment of the current road and the beginning segment of the next road to perform local path planning online by polynomial curve fitting. The preview follower control is used to make the vehicle following the trajectory planned to cross the intersection when secure for turning. As to the preview follower control method, the simulation of “vehicleroadcontroller” based on the Matlab/Simulink shows that the vehicle can follow the planned trajectory with smooth steering wheel angle curve which can be conducted by steering system. Finally, field test shows that by applying this method, the unmanned vehicle with EPS can turn autonomously at intersections.

    Big data brings both opportunities and challenges to technological development and application innovation of urban intelligent transportation system. Significant changes of ITS, which brought by traffic big data, are shown in three aspects: the concept of traffic big data, problems brought by traffic big data, and big-data-driven based mathematic modeling methods. This paper is intended to deeply understand big data, the background and category of traffic big data are sketched, the“6V”characteristics of traffic big data are proposed, the basic types of traffic big data in ITS are summarized. Strategies and ideas are presented based on the problems of traffic big data, namely, data security, network communication, computational efficiency, and data storage. This paper also analyzes the method of data driven model, and describes the significance of hybrid model. Finally, system framework of ITS based on traffic big data is proposed.

    As a new method of traffic information collection, the probe vehicle technology has been widely used. The current challenge is to determine the number of probe vehicles in the premise of certain coverage. This paper summarizes the researches on the domestic and international traffic information coverage models of probe vehicle, and analyzes the shortcomings of existing products. Considering the coverage mechanism and effects of link characteristics, a coverage model including link characteristics is proposed. For model solution, the maximum likelihood estimation is adopted to obtain the parameters. Finally, an example is presented using the field data from probe vehicle system of Nanjing city of China. The result proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model, and this method could provide reference to the probe vehicle data collection scheme in the cities.

    The paper puts forward an integration method of Excel VBA, VISSIM and MATLAB for traffic simulation platform, which indeed solve the problem of programming difficulty and time consuming if the highlevel programming language is used to reprogram. The Excel VBA is the master control program. Excel VBA has the easy interface programming with VISSIM and MATLAB. The MATLAB has the powerful toolbox, library function and the advantages of analyzing the matrix. The VISSIM and MATLAB are the called objects of Excel VBA. VISSIM usually simulates traffic flow and outputs the performance index. MATLAB is programmed for the proposed traffic control model. The integration of VISSIM and Excel is realized by the COM data communication interface. The integration of Excel and MATLAB is realized by the Excel Link extension interface. The proposed integration method for traffic control simulation platform provides an effective solution to validate the traffic control model. The paper also presents an example of Qlearning signal timing optimization based on the proposed traffic control simulation platform.

    With the development and application of mobile positioning technology, more and more private cars and taxis are equipped with GPS, and produce a great deal spatio-temporal trajectory data. In order to mine the characteristics of drivers based on these data. This paper studies spatio-temporal trajectory data of taxi in Beijing city from the perspective of time geography,the driver residence mining method and rule analyzing method of work and rest is put forward and is realized, and the experimental results are analyzed. Sample experimental results show the space distribution of the driver residence, and show that the number of driver routines of the total similarity between 0.6–1, accounted for 73.75% of the total. The information mined through the method can provide decision support for the management of the taxi, and the method application for private car has important significance.

    With analysis of the joint choice features of travel time and travel mode, the paper develops two nested Logit (NL) models on commuters’ travel time and travel model choice behavior .The data from the 2005 Beijing household travel survey are used to estimate the two models by the BIOGEME. The structure of the NL model is identified by the inclusive value parameter, and the result reveals the travel timetravel mode model is more reasonable than the travel modetravel time model, which indicates that the commuters always choose the travel time at first and then consider the travel mode under the time constrain. Moreover, the parameters of travel timetravel mode model are calibrated and analyzed. The joint choice features of travel time and travel mode are further discussed, which provides theory basis for relevant management policy making during peak time.
    Calculation and Analysis of Transportation Energy Consumption Level in China

    The data of transportation energy consumption has aroused high attention of the decision-makers. The paper analyzes the differences between the statistical data of transportation energy consumption in China and the international statistical caliber, and thinks that the data of private vehicle, motorcycle, low-speed vehicle (agricultural automobile) are lack in the statistics of China. It develops a calculation model of transportation energy consumption based on the vehicle driving and calibrates related parameters. The result shows that, based on the correction of international caliber, the transportation accounts for 60.1% (36.4% according to the domestic statistics) of the total petroleum end-use consumption, and the transportation accounts for 12.7% (8.1% according to the domestic statistics) of the total energy end-use consumption. The paper also compares the transportation energy consumption level of China with other developed countries, and finds that the energy consumption per capita and the transportation energy consumption proportion are relatively low in China, but increase rapidly in recent years.

    According to the research and development status of intelligent transport systems

    Capacity analysis to intersections is very important in traffic engineering as non-motorized flow is of significant effects on road capacity. This paper reviews the world-wide
    situation on intersections with non-motorized flow and analyzes the characteristics and problems
    of current achievements. Based on the attributes of mixed traffic with great proportion of non-motorized
    vehicles in China, the paper establishes the capacity models on intersections with signal in urban areas. The conclusions made here are of great significance for further research to develop a simulation system.
