Abstract: Most developing cities are characterized by their mixed traffics involving motorized vehicles, non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. Under this heterogeneous condition, motorized vehicles are inevitably disturbed by non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. However the extent of disturbing could be different in different cities, or in different areas of a city. It is important to find out the differences of disturbing for traffic managers to develop effective and efficient measures to manage the mixed traffic. This research devotes to describe and distinguish the differences of disturbing at intersections in developing cities and then develop a novel method to classify these intersections. It employs the time a vehicle uses to pass the intersection as a key indicator and captures disturbing features by comparing values of this indicator between two different conditions of only motorized traffic and mixed traffic. It is found that the disturbance will initially get more intense and then tend to be stable as the volume of non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians increases. It also shows that an intersection pools very close disturbances among its vehicles, but different intersections have very different disturbances. The findings yield the methodology applying to classify mixed traffic intersections. This study is conducted based on field data from Beijing city. Consequently a recommended table of re-sorting Beijing’s intersections under conditions of mixed traffic is also drawn out.
