Journal of Transportation Systems Engineering and Information Technology    2009, 9 (2): 155-160.
    Abstract12421)      PDF (767KB)(1117)
The annual vehicle kilometers traveled (AVKT) is essential to study the transportation and environmental protection. The key influencing factors of AVKT include vehicle type, regional transportation capacity, and vehicles’ technique conditions. Because it is difficult to obtain the exact value of AVKT under current technical conditions, AVKT has to be estimated according to other data. Based on the analysis of the influencing factors of AVKT, this study develops an algorithm to calculate AVKT on the basis of a small sample. The establishment of calculation formula is based on the data of vehicle type, vehicle licensing, accumulated mileage, and vehicle population. This study also proposes an algorithm to calculate vehicle mileage distribution based on the accumulated mileage. The research shows that AVKT is determined by the vehicle type distribution, vehicle age distribution, vehicle mileage distribution, and the accumulated mileage. With consideration of various factors, the method is suitable for a variety of classification standards and can be generalized to some extent. The method is also exemplified by the data and is proved to be feasible.

Journal of Transportation Systems Engineering and Information Technology    2010, 10 (4): 73-78.
    Abstract10727)      PDF (673KB)(1060)
The real-time and reliable urban traffic flow prediction is the foundation of traffic management and control in the urban traffic. A variable cell transmission model (VCTM) is proposed to improve the ability of the urban traffic flow prediction. Based on the analysis of the defects using the cell transmission model (CTM) to predict the urban traffic flow, two parameters are introduced into the VCTM according to the traffic flow conservation law. In the VCTM, three different types of cell connections are described by three different expressions including simple connection, merge connection and diverge connection. Two parameters of the VCTM increase computational burden, but the cell length is adjustable which ensures that the VCTM can be widely utilized in the roads with different lengths. The simulation results indicate that the VCTM meets the requirements of the traffic flow prediction in the urban traffic.

Journal of Transportation Systems Engineering and Information Technology    2010, 10 (1): 81-87.
    Abstract6654)      PDF (846KB)(1157)
This study proposes a practical framework to assess the evaluable societal profitability of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) projects, which are widely implemented in many cities of China. This work aims to estimate the whole economic benefit into an outcome figure which received great care from government authorities and transportation engineers. The initiative of proved framework is to maintain both the practicability in terms of data accessibility in societal reality and scalability in terms of its convincingness and academic value. A case study of assessing intelligent transportation management and control system in Beijing is conducted to further illustrate the proposed methodology. The investment for ITS can be enlarged more than 20 times,
which shows significant “leverage effect” of ITS investment, and establishing intelligent transportation systemsis an effective way to resolve the conflicts between sharply increasing motor vehicle amount and limited city land resources.

Journal of Transportation Systems Engineering and Information Technology    2010, 10 (1): 22-27.
    Abstract6327)      PDF (859KB)(3040)
The data of transportation energy consumption has aroused high attention of the decision-makers. The paper analyzes the differences between the statistical data of transportation energy consumption in China and the international statistical caliber, and thinks that the data of private vehicle, motorcycle, low-speed vehicle (agricultural automobile) are lack in the statistics of China. It develops a calculation model of transportation energy consumption based on the vehicle driving and calibrates related parameters. The result shows that, based on the correction of international caliber, the transportation accounts for 60.1% (36.4% according to the domestic statistics) of the total petroleum end-use consumption, and the transportation accounts for 12.7% (8.1% according to the domestic statistics) of the total energy end-use consumption. The paper also compares the transportation energy consumption level of China with other developed countries, and finds that the energy consumption per capita and the transportation energy consumption proportion are relatively low in China, but increase rapidly in recent years.

Journal of Transportation Systems Engineering and Information Technology    2011, 11 (3): 58-64.
    Abstract6132)
The quay crane dynamic scheduling problem based on berth schedules in container terminal involves the allocation of limited quay crane resources and the scheduling of loading and unloading tasks on each ship, with its berth time and location known, in order to reduce the total time of all the ships arriving at the terminal in the planning horizon. Under the real constraints of non-crossing of quay cranes and the sequence requires among tasks, the non-linear mathematical planning model is set up. A genetic algorithm is proposed according to the characteristics of the problem, and the chromosome representation is structured on the sequence of tasks. The model and the algorithm are proved effectiveness via the comparisons of scheduling results with literature on a single ship, the comparisons of scheduling results between multi-ships and single ship, and the simulation of quay crane dynamic scheduling among multi-ships.
